Sorry, Mia Wallace, Your signature vampy lip is done, done, done! Although I, myself, love a vampy lip color, the hue of dried blood isn’t as groundbreaking as it once was. The new shade that has everyone talking since March is your least favorite neutral: gray.
To me, gray is the type of color that screams “dull.” It often feels so basic to the core that I barely wear ANY gray on my body apart from silver jewelry or a sweatshirt that I lounge in. In fact, I don’t even know what to make of this muddled shade when I first saw Huda Kattan wear it on her Instagram.
Given that the year is coming to an end, you can close the chapter on 2017 by rocking this trend and wear it throughout the new year. Here are some ways how you can wear this color:
1. Monochrome Metallic
Huda Beauty’s Liquid Lipstick in Silver Fox
Monochrome and metallic may not feel like two peas in a pod, but when you have ’em in the same shade, why not you put the two and two together? Emulate your inner Cher by rocking silver eyeshadow and gray lips!
2. Sweet Smoke
OCC Cosmetics Lip Tar in Indrid
Smoky eyes and smoky lips? This combo is endearingly classic, darlings. When going for a soft smoky eye, switch from charcoal to blue. The blue pigment will complement the purple undertones from this pinky gray shade. In fact, it makes your features shine brighter than your highlighter!
3. Coffee Casual
OCC Cosmetics in Spiked and Rihanna x MAC Viva Glam II*
Sorry, Tumblr. You did not invent grunge. If you want REAL ’90s grunge, just take a handful of kohl eyeliner and brown eyeshadow down the bottom of your eyelids. With a smear of your fingertips, it’ll give you that “lived through this” look (shoutout to Courtney Love!) that screams all nighter jam sessions at your boyfriend’s garage. But since you don’t want to be *too* retro, a little bit of sparkle never hurts at all! Since my mix of OCC’s Spiked and Rihanna’s Viva Glam 2 shades result in a brownish greige taupe, it’s super duper easy to rock it everyday. BONUS TIP: Just sip a cup of coffee for that #fotd shot.
*Since both shades are discontinued, you can dupe the look by adding lip gloss to your gray eyeshadow and mix it with brown lipstick!
