Urban Cowgirl: A Guide to Country Dressing

Watch out, Daisy Duke! There’s a new girl in town and she’s ready to bring her game on. Instead of pounding the streets in short shorts, plaid tees and cowboy boots, she’s ready to make a splash in suede, ruffles and lace. To all my lovelies out there, take notes: this country look is going in STRONG!

Speaking of country, there are ways to rock this trend: either you keep it simple like Miley Cyrus or go hard for that urban rodeo vibe like Gigi Hadid. As much as I want to rock my cowboy hat and boots, I’m swapping them out for my vintage Roncelli studded suede pants and Gianvito Rossi lace boots. But to keep it looking country cutie chic, I swear by my vintage Guess jacket and ruffled lace-trim top. Tie-in the look with a quilted bag for that ultra extra touch! To quote Hannah Montana, it’s the best of both worlds!!

If going edgy ain’t for you, grab a prairie-style dress. (Preferably in a bright or pastel color like mine!) Prairie dresses may look hard to wear outside the runways and lookbooks, but please give it a chance. Generally, they tend to be long-sleeved, but feel free to roll the sleeves up. Kick it up with some boots or some white sneakers! Believe me, you will never run out of ideas with it.

“She likes to make me think that I’m a freak just for her velvet” – R5

Two months ago, I went to an R5 concert in NYC and it was the first time that I saw them. Although I knew of their name through friends and met three out of the five at a party in L.A., it was time for me to let my earbuds give in. Given that I knew NOTHING of their songs prior to the concert, I couldn’t resist taping a song or two.

As I got home, I had to look up half the lyrics of this amazing song and it turns out that it was aptly titled “Red Velvet”. Like my favorite cupcake flavor, the melody felt delicious, mouthwatering and arousing. Sitting in my closet for an X amount of months, it inspired me to pull out my vintage Betsey Johnson red velvet dress, which I scored on Etsy nearly five years ago.

Here, I wore it during my last month in NYC with my go-to floral Docs, Chanel bag and Seville Michelle choker. Summer-appropriate, yet cool enough to wear it anywhere else that isn’t sweltering hot. If you’re feeling the chills, just throw on a jacket. 😉

Moving out of NYC sucks, but coming back to Singapore feels great! After being stuck in the snow for two months, all I really want is some warmer temps. As much as I want to rock my PVCs and leather in this little island, it’s literally too hot and humid to do that. So, I just had to remind myself (in the haze of the jet lag blur) that I need to start wearing breathable fabrics. Not to mention, that must also include cute jewelry!

In this case, I cannot resist myself from Stella and Bow’s newest Riviera jewelry collection. Inspired by Mexico, the L.A.-based jewelry brand exudes island vibes that make me feel like I’m in the country’s beautiful sandy beaches. (FYI, I’ve never been to Mexico, but I REALLY wanna go so badly!!!) From their 14K vermeil golds, opal stones and shimmering sterling silvers, I am immediately in love with the timelessness of each piece.

Most importantly, must such a beautiful treasure have a hefty price tag? No! Thankfully, each piece is extremely affordable at the price of a restaurant meal. Seriously, you must NOT sleep on Stella and Bow’s budget-friendly beauties!

Tell me, what will you wear this collection with?

P.S. Sorry if my photos aren’t high-res enough! I just got back from NYC and when I do jewelry selfies, my angles suck! 😝

Slip it Away: A Case Study for the Perfect Dress

I don’t like to wake up and I hate getting out of bed. I also hate wearing Spanx for all of eternity. If there is one thing I must do to hide my period bloat, what else can I wear besides leggings or jeans? Thankfully, it’s something that I can slip away at the end of the day. Mis amigas, this is is a slip dress.
